Jiuzhaigou, whose name means “Valley of Nine Villages,” is a national park and nature reserve in the mountains of northern Sichuan Province. It is world-famous for its spectacular scenery, especially its waterfalls and lakes. A number of the lakes in the area have crystal-clear water in unusual shades of green and blue caused by the presence of calcium carbonate.
