Shanghai Travel Tips

With its world-class collections of bronzeware, ceramics, calligraphy, and paintings, along with other ancient Chinese relics of many kinds, the Shanghai Museum (上海博物馆, Shànghǎi Bówùguǎn) is a must-see. Check out our Shanghai Museum page for photos and information.

In addition to the famous Nanjing Road and Temple of the Town Gods areas featured in the photos below, great areas for strolling, shopping, dining, and nightlife in Shanghai include the Xintiandi (新天地, Xīntiāndì) area, the Jing’an Temple (静安寺, Jìng’ānsì) area, the Xujiahui (徐家汇, Xújiāhuì) shopping district, Duolun Road Cultural Street (多伦路文化名人街, Duōlúnlù Wénhuà Míngrénjiē), and Qibao Ancient Town (七宝古镇, Qībǎo Gǔzhèn).

Other fun things to do include hanging out at the Vue Bar, located on the 32nd and 33rd floors of the Hyatt on the Bund, which as its name suggests offers amazing views of the Bund, Pudong skyscrapers, and the Huangpu River; visiting the large and impressive Shanghai Ocean Aquarium (海洋水族馆, Hǎiyáng Shuǐzúguǎn) at the foot of the Oriental Pearl Tower; and seeing a stunning Chinese circus performance at Shanghai Circus World (上海马戏城, Shànghǎi Mǎxìchéng).

If you visit Shanghai during its hot and humid summers, be sure to bring plenty of changes of cool, light clothing. But keep in mind that Shanghai can also be surprisingly cold in the winter, as evidenced by the two significant snowfalls that occurred during the Chinese New Year period in 2013 (link to blog photos).
